AUTOMATIC WASTE DISPOSAL UNITS ON TRIAL IN WANDSWORTH
Connaught is working in partnership with waste technology experts, Morgan Everett, to introduce to the UK market a revolutionary system of bins that empty themselves.
Connaught's environmental business, which is an integral part of its social housing division, has signed an exclusive deal with Morgan Everett to bring to market their patented waste disposal system - PyroPure®. This is a unique thermal treatment process which includes the use of pyrolysis. In March Morgan Everett is setting up field trials of their Morgan AutoBins®, powered by PyroPure®, in apartment blocks owned by Wandsworth Borough Council. For the first time anywhere in the UK, the apartment blocks will be able to destroy residents' waste at the point it is created.
The Morgan AutoBin is one of a range of products being developed by Morgan Everett that are designed to destroy the majority of municipal waste at source using its patented thermal treatment, PyroPure®. Essentially, residents of apartment blocks will dispose of waste in the normal manner via the communal rubbish chute system. However, instead of it being stored and collected from paladins (large bins) at the chute exit in the basement, it will be destroyed automatically inside the Morgan AutoBin.
Ted Brown, CEO for Morgan Everett said:
"We really believe the technology can transform the way waste is managed and bring major benefits to the environment, waste producers and the industry in general. Now, in what is a very exciting phase of development, the system is moving from proving itself in laboratory conditions to proving itself in a real life situation. We expect the field trials to take up to twenty weeks, maybe more."
Following trials, Connaught is to use the Morgan AutoBin system as part of its waste management package for councils and social landlords as part of its deal with Morgan Everett.
Darren Frost, managing director of Connaught Environmental said:
"The application of the PyroPure® technology will radically alter the way we and councils deal with waste. It will be cheaper because it removes the need for collection and transportation of rubbish; it is more hygienic and is better for the environment. The system has tremendous potential and we are eagerly awaiting the results of the field trials."
The trials follow months of research and analysis with Wandsworth B.C. into the waste disposal habits of residents. AutoBins will be installed in the waste chambers of two apartment blocks (one high rise, one low rise). The waste is deposited by residents via a pre-existing chute system on each floor. It will then drop down the chute into the waste chamber and be automatically fed into the waiting AutoBin.
Councillor Malcolm Grimston, Wandsworth BC's cabinet member for the Environment and Leisure said: "We are excited to be taking the lead in such an innovative piece of technology that could be the long term solution to the UK's growing concerns about the disposal of waste and its impact upon the environment."
